On September 26th, we had the opportunity to have Jesse Miller as our guest speaker. He spoke about technology and how today’s youth are using it and questioned us about our use of technology. He went into detail about privacy policies and our professional responsibilities as future educators.

That said, I found this presentation to be quite intriguing. What Jesse had to say was up to date with what is currently happening in our society. After this presentation, I combed through all my social media platforms. Although almost all my social media is private, I still have a few accounts that can be found publicly. Though there isn’t anything wrong with what’s on it, it still reminds me to rethink what I plan to post.

There were a few things that stuck with me after this presentation:

  1. Generations may have changed, but human behaviour hasn’t.
  2. Allowing a set amount of time for students to go on their phones during class but ensuring there is a boundary between phone time and focused class time.
  3. How you choose to use social media impacts your well-being.

Overall, ensuring I am responsible when using social media is important. We, as educators, are helping raise digital youth, and for many students, we are adult figures they look up to. In the future, I will make sure I am using professional boundaries when consulting with media platforms.
